The NH35/NH36-based Seiko SKX007-style build is universally recommended for beginners. Parts are cheap, widely available, and almost every tool and tutorial is geared toward this platform. Start with a kit from one supplier to guarantee compatibility, then graduate to individual parts once you understand sizing and fitment.

No formal training is required for basic modding (dial swaps, hand changes, crystal replacement, caseback opening). Most people learn from YouTube and forums. The key skills are patience, clean technique, and knowing your tools. However, movement servicing (oiling, regulation, disassembly) does require more study. Start with a cheap/dead movement for practice before touching your main build.

Watch modding means customising a watch by swapping or upgrading parts — dials, hands, crystals, bezels, straps — or building a watch from scratch using aftermarket components. It is completely legal. You are modifying your own property. However, modded watches cannot be marketed as the original brand (e.g. a Rolex-cased mod cannot be sold as a "Rolex"). The global watch modding community is huge — most active on Reddit r/Watches, r/SeikoMods, WatchUSeek forums, and Facebook modding groups.

Approximate costs for a first build: NH35 movement: $20–$40, Case: $20–$60, Dial: $10–$35, Hands: $5–$20, Crystal + gasket: $8–$20, Caseback: $5–$15, Bezel + insert: $10–$30, Basic tool set: $50–$100 (one-time). Total for a first complete build: $130–$280 USD including tools. Without tools: $80–$180.

Modding typically means modifying an existing production watch — swapping the dial on a Seiko 5, fitting a new bezel on an SKX, etc. Building from scratch (sometimes called "franken" building) means assembling a watch entirely from aftermarket parts: bare case, movement, dial, hands, crystal, caseback, bezel — often creating something that resembles a specific luxury watch style at a fraction of the cost. Both are part of the hobby.

Power reserve is how long a fully-wound watch runs before stopping. The NH35 has a power reserve of approximately 41 hours. Some premium movements offer 70+ hours (Seiko 6R35: 70 hrs; Rolex 3235: 70 hrs). A longer power reserve means a watch survives a weekend without being worn. If you rotate multiple watches, higher power reserve is very practical.
